Busy lifestyles leave little time for things that really matter

by Julia McMichael

This was the “week that was.” Do you remember that TV show? Hot and cool weather, train and traffic jams, tragic decisions and even deaths. I felt every emotion this week.

Love, happiness, sadness, kindness, selfishness and prejudice are strong emotions, but for me guilt is the worst feeling you can have.

A young man died a few weeks ago, alone and without the help of anyone who might have cared, and I knew his plight. I didn't help. I was too busy.

The Christian Bible teaches that helping someone in need (an unknown brother) is the same as helping the Savior. I lost the blessing.

How often do we need to check on someone and not do it? You pass before you've spoken to him or her, even though you know you should, but you don't because you were too busy.

You feel guilty and promise you won't do something like that again, but you do. Guilt is terrible but fleeting.

• The Westwood Shores Subdivision Flea Market was a huge success, but was marred by tragedy. I heard a helicopter flying over my house Saturday night and later learned that Life Flight had to be called to help another young man who had shot himself. He wasn't from Trinity.

•Last week I told you about the successful 42-domino tournament at Joseph's, but I didn't tell you who the winners were. The first place team was Rob Hutchings and June Harrell; The second place team was Ivy Phillips and Mary Barnet and the third place team was Dean Decker and Marian McMillian.

Kelly Hartsfield hosted this event and she did a great job. She is the wonderful singer in our Christmas show who wows everyone with her voice and a teacher in our school district. Thank you for everything you do for our community.

• At this time, I must recognize the people in our community who are involved in organizations and events that make a difference in our lives.

First, Charles Payne of Point Blank, who served as president of the Trinity Lions Club for two years during the pandemic, then took office again in 2022 to maintain the club's operations until old and new members could return to meetings.

Next up is Areia Bacon, who for years was in charge of the Houston Food Bank truck that came to Trinity Community Center and during that time worked as an administrator for Trinity's Head Start program.

She is now president of the Trinity Peninsula Chamber of Commerce and has big plans for the Trinity Christmas Show, parade and vendors while working for the Trinity Hospital District Board. She is also our newest member of the Trinity Lions Club.

Some Thursdays each month you can hear their valuable nutrition, health and aging programs at the Martin Senior Center to benefit the senior citizens of our community. She is invaluable. Thank you again, Areia, for loving our community.

• Speaking of the Martin Senior Citizen Center, we have a new dollar store and raffle corner in the building at 400 Walker St. Visit the Martin Center from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and grab lunch for the chance to have some beautiful items and win a valuable prize.

• Great news. Dr. Amol Deshpande has returned to his Trinity pediatric practice at 317 Prospect Drive within the MidCoast Hospital facility.

• Congratulations to Tristan Gustafson, the 2024 Fair Queen winner.

Also, don't forget Purse Bingo at the YMCA campgrounds on Saturday and Trinity County Cleanup Day also on Saturday.

See you there.
