The WeHo City Council receives updates on public safety technology outreach

At a regular meeting of the West Hollywood City Council on Monday, October 7, 2024, the City Council will receive an update on the Outreach Plan for implementation public safety Technology in West Hollywood. The goal of the planned outreach effort is to inform residents, visitors and businesses about a year-long pilot program to improve safety in the community.

According to one city Personnel reportThe City Council approved the use of public safety technology on July 15, 2024. The pilot program includes drones as first responders, fixed real-time cameras and a real-time monitoring center. As part of the motion, the council asked staff to quickly develop an outreach plan to ensure the community is aware of these new measures.

The Community Safety Department will lead public outreach efforts in collaboration with the city's communications department and the West Hollywood Sheriff's Station. The strategy includes digital messaging, printed materials and direct communication with business owners and residents. Important parts of the outreach effort will include promoting the pilot program under the name “Safer WeHo,” setting up a dedicated website, and disseminating information through social media and local transportation shelters.

Key services include:

  • A “Safer WeHo” branding system for the pilot program.
  • Direct mail postcards to inform residents.
  • Public service announcements (PSA) at kiosks in city hall, municipal facilities and commercial areas.
  • A website hub at weho.org, complete with FAQs and a universal QR code for easy access to resources.
  • An in-person public meeting to engage community members.

The outreach plan will begin in August and will begin with handout distribution during National Night Out. Digital graphics, a postal postcard and a new website will be available by September. The plan culminates in increased social media engagement, a press release and a public meeting in October and November to further raise awareness.

The City Council is expected to review outreach progress at an upcoming meeting and ensure all efforts are consistent with the city's goal of improving public safety through innovative technology.
