The Fulton County coroner's office said the Atlanta rapper's death was an accidental overdose Fox 5 Atlanta. Several substances were found in his body, including fentanyl, alprazolam, codeine, promethazine and THC. The cause of death was determined to be an accident, and the examination revealed no signs of trauma.

Quan, known for his 2013 breakout hit “Type of Way,” died on September 5 in an Atlanta hospital. On the day of his death, his brother discovered him lying lifeless on the floor with food in his mouth, according to an incident report obtained by PEOPLE. After putting Quan on the couch, an unnamed woman noticed he was cold and not breathing, prompting her to call police.

Following the devastating news, the 34-year-old rapper's family released a warm statement express their deep sadness. They also vowed to honor his memory and ensure his legacy lives on.

“On Thursday, September 5, 2024, the Lamar family lost our beloved son, brother, father and friend. “Dequante's Devontay Lamar, known to the world as Rich Homie Quan, proudly hailed from the great city of Atlanta, Georgia and represented the A's as he and his music traveled the world,” it said. “While he leaves an undeniable hole in our hearts, we take comfort in knowing that his music and his triumphant spirit live on. Quan's legacy will forever be enshrined as the soundtrack of our lives. And we are grateful for that. Details of the celebration of life will be announced soon.
