Update

The outage appears to be over

The outage finally appears to be easing.

As of 6:30 p.m. Pacific Time, Down Detector recorded a decline in reports to under 700 reports, beginning with a decline in reports that began around 5:15 p.m. Pacific Time.

Beyond the original statement released, Bank of America has not responded or posted about what may have caused the outage.

Tom's Guide will keep an eye on the outage in case anything changes. For now it seems to be over.

After Bank of America submitted inquiries, the bank finally sent a response.

Unfortunately, the statement is the same as that obtained by CNN a few hours ago.

“Some customers today are experiencing a problem accessing their account and balance information. These issues are currently being addressed and are mostly resolved. We apologize for any inconvenience.”

We have requested clarification on the current issue and when customers can expect a full resolution.

We have seen several reports of people being denied entry to actual Bank of America locations, like in the image above.

At this point, most physical banks are closing or about to close. Still, it appears to confirm previous reports that the physical BofA banks' systems were also experiencing problems.

In July, BofA announced that over 58 million people were using the company's “digital capabilities” and had done so over “23.4 billion times.” A significant number of people are locked out of their accounts.

As of this writing, 4:45 p.m. Pacific Time, Down Detector is still showing reports reaching the 2,500 mark and people on social media are still reporting problems with the app.

Bank of America remains silent.

As of this writing, 4:15 p.m. Pacific, the only comment we have received from Bank of America was the brief statement saying the bank was aware of the issue and a solution was in the works.

Down Detector is still showing over 2,500 strong outage reports that have been ongoing since approximately 1:30 p.m. Pacific Time.

There are numerous complaints on social media, including X, BofA's Facebook account, Down Detector and Reddit.

Tom's Guide has reached out to Bank of America for comment and will update if it responds. Since several Bank of America customers have complained about attempting to use Zelle with their BofA accounts, we also reached out to Zelle for comment. Again, if the company responds, we will update with their statement.

Currently, Bank of America still appears to be struggling. We've seen mixed reports about people being able to use their debit cards and others not. Some have claimed that they can see their balances when accessing individual accounts, but not on the main Bank of America app dashboard. Others have disputed this.

For every “I can do this,” there seems to be an equivalent “I can’t.”

And now more customers are angry about Bank of America's silence than about the problem.

One X user wrote: “I honestly don't understand how Bank of America released ZERO statements about their nationwide outage. Literally nothing. Everyone is in the dark. Awkward.”

Information security

Bank of America has a separate X account called Bank of America Help. It is a verified account at X that Bank of America links directly to via its website.

The account responded to people's complaints with an automated message that looks like this:

Regardless of whether the BofA Help account is real or not, we strongly recommend that you do not simply post your information as a reply. Be careful when sending a DM to the account, even if the account is verified.

Currently the line is probably flooded with anxious customers, but there is an official support phone number of 844.375.7028.

Their website also recommends making an appointment to “meet a specialist” through the app, which may not work at this time.

We also saw other X users posting posts encouraging people to contact “cybersecurity” experts who tagged them. Do not Do that. That's just unsafe behavior.

And it's best to ignore the crypto bros who are more or less trolling at this point.

It's always stressful when a banking app goes down, especially when your account shows $0.00.

Many of the complaints we see on X, Down Detector, and Reddit are related to the fact that many people have bills and rent due this week. And if you didn't receive a salary on the last Friday of September (the 27th), expect it to be paid on Friday, October 4th.

Complaints are still coming in

The first Down Detector reports came in around 9:45 a.m. Pacific, with the largest increase peaking at 10:20 a.m. Pacific this morning.

The peak of 20,000 reports lasted about 20 minutes and outage reports have decreased. However, they have remained stable in the 2500 area since around 1:45 p.m. Pacific Time.

Despite Bank of America's claims, there are still numerous reports and complaints that the app and account information are not working properly.

Although there are people who claim that their debit cards are still working, they simply cannot see the transaction in the mobile apps or online.

Bank of America released a statement to CNN

Bank of America told CNN in a statement that a solution is in the works and the issue is mostly resolved.

“These issues are being addressed and are largely resolved,” Bank of America said. “We apologize for any inconvenience.”

They did not provide any information about the cause of the problem or when all of their systems would be fully functional again.

Support via private messages

Now that the bank's customers have expressed their outrage over this outage on social media, the bank's social support team has logged on to X and is now answering questions via private message. I'm not entirely sure what they can do for affected customers, but you can leave your name, zip code and phone number so they can contact you if necessary.

Closing physical locations?

Aside from the mobile app and website, some Bank of America locations now appear to be closed. According to a post on X, a customer went to his local bank and saw a sign saying the branch was temporarily closed.

Take this with a grain of salt for now, but we'll keep an eye on it to see if other Bank of America locations have closed shop due to the outage.

Missing transfers and deposits

DownDetector comments

In addition to incorrect and completely missing checking and savings account balances, Bank of America customers have reported on DownDetector that transfer and deposit options don't even appear in the bank's mobile app. For those who have scheduled transactions that need to be executed today, this is bad news.

Outage confirmed but not yet resolved

If you checked your Bank of America account today and realized you were suddenly broke, you're not alone. The bank is currently experiencing a widespread, nationwide outage, with accounts showing either incorrect balances or no balances at all.

Bank of America has now confirmed that some customers are experiencing issues with their accounts and balance information. The company says the issues are being addressed and have been resolved for most customers. However, a steady stream of complaints about DownDetector would contradict that.
