WATCH: Walz says his son witnessed a shooting at a community center

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz argued for stricter gun control laws at Tuesday's vice presidential debate, noting that both he and his running mate, Kamala Harris, are gun owners.

Walz said the country needs to do more to protect schoolchildren and advocated for both stronger gun control and more research on gun violence.

“I ask all of you out there: Do you want your schools to look like a fortress?” Walz said, adding that there are children in other countries who don't do target practice in school.

“They are children. We owe it to them to find a solution,” he said.

Walz also recounted how his 17-year-old son, while playing volleyball, witnessed a shooting at a community center.

“These things don’t let you go,” Walz said.

Just over a month before Election Day, Ohio Senators JD Vance and Walz met on October 1 for their first and only vice presidential debate, hosted by CBS in New York.
