Lille – Real Madrid 1-0: The defending champions suffer a surprising Champions League defeat

Defending champions Real Madrid suffered their first Champions League defeat since May 2023 when Lille upset them at the Pierre Mauroy Stadium.

It was also the first defeat for Carlo Ancelotti's side in 36 games in all competitions – dating back to January 18 against Atlético Madrid in the Copa del Rey.

Jonathan David scored Lille's only goal from the penalty spot after a video assistant referee (VAR) review ruled that Real's French midfielder Eduardo Camavinga had blocked Edon Zhegrova's free-kick with his arm.

The hosts played superbly throughout and more than deserved their win to get them going in this season's competition after losing 2-0 to Sporting in their opening game.

Before Canadian international David converted the penalty, he was denied by a great double save from visiting goalkeeper Andriy Lunin, allowing Bruno Genesio's team to dominate the game.

In the end, however, they had to hold on against a Real side that brought on Kylian Mbappe, returning from a hamstring injury, just before the hour mark.

During a late rally by the visitors, Antonio Rüdiger's header was cleared off the line and Arda Güler headed a great chance straight at home goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier.

Real, who beat Stuttgart in their opening game, host Borussia Dortmund in their next Champions League game, a repeat of last season's final, while Lille travel to Atlético Madrid.
