The reigning champions were unable to counter the Ligue 1 side, while Lille's only goal of the game came in the form of a penalty from Jonathan David. They will be happy that David was unable to move this summer after giving them a lifeline in the prestigious UEFA competition.

But who was responsible for the defeat of the Spanish giants? Here are Real Madrid's best and worst players since the defeat 90 minutes appreciated Player ratings.

Madrid captain Dani Carvajal showed his leadership qualities on the pitch by driving his team for most of the game and pushing further up the pitch to create more chances in front of goal.

He won almost all of his duels and played eight passes into the final third. However, this did not affect his defensive duties.

Carvajal was literally everywhere, breaking through Lille's defense and flying back to defend his goal as the tempo changed.

Honorable mention

Eduardo Camavinga: 7/10

Eduardo Camavinga made a great return from injury and played for his team in the Champions League clash in Madrid.

The midfielder danced around the middle of the pitch, putting out fires everywhere he went. He was the most fouled player on the pitch but managed to get himself into the right position at the right time to prevent Lille from running away with a lead.

He was responsible for Lille's penalty – a costly mistake – but was otherwise excellent.

Endrick: 4/10

Endrick became Madrid's youngest player ever to start in the Champions League after being given a place in Carlo Ancelotti's lineup for the game against Lille. His first start for the club was an exciting prospect for fans, but that excitement soon faded as the 18-year-old failed to influence the game and drive his side's attacking play.

The Brazilian worked hard while he was on the pitch and had opportunities to score, but instead he committed stupid fouls and ended up getting a yellow card after lunging at Alexsandro Ribeiro.

It hasn't been a bad start for the youngster, but Endrick needs to improve on this outing if he is to live up to his expectations in Spain.

Dishonorable mentions

Vinicius Junior: 5/10

It wasn't a good evening for Endrick's attacking partner either.

Vinicius Junior, the older of the two leaders, was unable to overtake Lille despite his best efforts. He attempted four shots, two of which were on target, and created two chances in front of goal. However, none of his efforts came to fruition.

Wednesday evening symbolized an unusual performance for the Brazilian, who has already scored three goals and seven assists in the 2024/25 season.

Jude Bellingham: 5/10

England star Jude Bellingham also struggled to make his mark on the game as he failed to show his quality throughout the 90 minutes.

He attempted two shots at the Lille goal, but only one hit the target. Elsewhere he barely managed to break through Lille's defence. However, he recorded the most tackles in the game, but received a yellow card later in the game after sending Osame Sahraoui at the wrong time.

Madrid's attacking stars lacked the flair and quality to deliver for their team in Wednesday's disappointing defeat and settled for defeat in the early stages of their Champions League campaign.
