Championship: Scott Parker's Burnley claims victory over Wayne Rooney's Plymouth

On a night when former coach Vincent Kompany was preparing to lead Bayern Munich into the Champions League, his old club Burnley were in action in the second division, having been relegated under the Belgian last season.

Kompany's team confidently won promotion two years ago by collecting 101 points, and while Parker's men bounce back at the first attempt, it will be in a much more controlled manner, with their last three wins now coming by one goal achieves margin.

Burnley's possession-based approach allowed them to take more shots than their opponents, but they were unable to beat them and Brownhill's first-half penalty ultimately gave them victory.

Lively winger Luca Koleosho looked the most dangerous option for Burnley and should have done much better when he side-footed a shot over the bar from 10 yards out.

South Africa international Lyle Foster ran through and beat the ball to Grimshaw but shot wide, while Brownhill failed to add to his tally after firing over from outside the box.

Argyle coach Rooney was at Old Trafford on Sunday and witnessed his former club Manchester United's 3-0 defeat to Tottenham. Even if it wasn't a comparable horror show for his current team, he will be disappointed that he didn't have home goalkeeper Trafford.

Ryan Hardie shot wide from distance in the first half and when Burnley got a bit sloppy in the second period they got some hope, but Plymouth were unable to capitalize as substitute Mustapha Bundu shot wide just before the end.
