The next storm will soon form in the Atlantic

The Tropics remain active with a named storm and two areas potentially forming.

Hurricane Kirk is located almost halfway between the Cabo Verde Islands and the western Caribbean. Kirk will continue to strengthen and eventually become a major hurricane.

The good news is that Kirk will turn north toward the middle of the Atlantic Ocean and remain over open water.

There is a strong tropical wave behind Kirk that will develop into a depression or Tropical Storm Leslie this Wednesday. Once it becomes Leslie, it will take a similar route to Kirk, turning into the colder waters of the North Atlantic.

Finally, another problem area is the Gulf of Mexico, where there is a 40% chance of a low pressure area developing. A tropical depression could form over the weekend if the disturbance moves fully into the Gulf of Mexico. There is currently a lot of uncertainty as the weather models do not agree well with this system in terms of its development. At least it will pump plenty of tropical moisture into the Sunshine State through this weekend. Stakeholders along the U.S. Gulf Coast should continue to monitor the progress of this system.
