Hawaii High School Football Rankings: Top 25 Teams – October 1

The October 1 Hawaii On3 Massey Ratings top 25 list is relatively flat compared to last week's rankings. Hawaii's top 10 high school football teams have retained their spots, and there's only one change at the bottom of the list. Here's how the state's top teams fared after another round of play on the final weekend of September.

The On3 Massey ReviewsOfficially used during the BCS era, is a model that ranks sports teams based on analysis of game results, strength of schedule, and margin of victory. According to the model, two teams from Hawaii rank in the top 100 nationally.

The Trojans earned the right to be the undisputed top team in Hawaii after defeating second-place Kahuku 14-10. It wasn't as goal-scoring as previous games, but they did enough to remain unbeaten after six games. Lehiwa Kahana-Travis led Mililani by completing a 58-yard touchdown pass to Jonas Togafau-Tavui and a rushing touchdown. After the Red Raiders, Mililani had three other top ten teams on board: James Campbell, Farrington and Kapolei.

Despite their 4-3 record, Kahuku remains the second-best team in Hawaii high school football as they lost to three top teams. After losing to Bishop Gorman, Nevada's number one team, the Red Raiders suffered setbacks against Mater Dei (the nation's top ranked team) and Mililani (Hawaii's number one team). However, they retain the state's top defense after limiting Mililani to 14 points in the loss. Kahuku can bounce back on Oct. 6 against ninth-ranked Waipahu.

The Sabers made easy work of the Kea'au Cougars, 50-14, and remained undefeated in five games. It's the third time they've scored at least 50 points in a game this season. Likewise, they have never scored fewer than 40 points this season, making them the top-ranked offense in the state. Against the Cougars, Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele threw six touchdowns while Rusten Abang-Perez had 134 receiving yards and three touchdowns. However, their schedule will become more demanding in the next three games as they sign Mililani, Waipahu and Kahuku.

Although it's been a roller coaster ride for the Crusaders lately, they are coming off a 31-21 win over Punahou. Before this match, they lost to Damien and Pac-Five while also picking up a win over Kamehameha. St. Louis would need more consistency to utilize the rest of its schedule and compete against Kamehameha, Iolani and Punahou.

There were bright spots for Punahou during the loss to St. Louis. Hunter Fujikawa threw for 234 yards and three touchdowns, while Zion White and Donte Utu combined for 182 rushing yards and three touchdowns. The Buff 'n Blue can reverse their three-game losing streak by defeating Kamehameha on October 12th and traveling to St. Louis on October 18th.

The Warriors haven't played since Sept. 14, when they beat Punahou for their fourth win in six games. In that game, Nainoa Melchor had 23 carries for 113 rushing yards and a touchdown. The victory over the Buff 'n Blue gives Kamehameha two wins against teams ranked in the top ten in Hawaii high school football. After a long break, the Warriors are back in action on October 5th against fourth-place St. Louis.

After suffering their first loss of the season, the Hurricanes responded with a 68-8 victory at the hands of ninth-seeded Waipahu. Liatama Amisone finished the game with 281 passing yards and four touchdowns, while Zayne Pasion and Maui Remigio combined for 197 receiving yards and four touchdowns. After averaging a season-high 39.2 points per game, Kapolei's high-powered offense will be tested by Farrington, Kahuku and Mililani over the next three weeks.

Not only did Farrington snap a three-game losing streak, but he also scored no points in the game against second-place Kahuku. However, they remain in the top ten as those losses came against the Red Raiders, the Crusaders and the Sabres. However, Farrington's schedule remains difficult as they face Kapolei, Mililani and Waipahu in the next three games.

The Marauders had a tough time, losing three games in a row and being outrebounded by a score of 154-31. Worst of all, they gave up 68 points to Kapolei. It's difficult to be optimistic about their chances as Kahuku, James Campbell and Farrington will be their next three opponents.

The Wildcats have either been shut out or blanked their opponents this season. However, they have been on a roll of late, having limited three of their last four opponents to zero points. After limiting Kea'au to six points, Konawaena didn't allow a single point to Hilo. Keenan Alani torched the Vikings' defense with four touchdown passes, while Aliimalu Tan had 222 receiving yards and two touchdowns. The Wildcats can extend their winning streak to five games by defeating Kealakehe on October 3rd.
