What should the San Francisco Giants do this offseason to right the franchise?

It's been another mediocre season for the San Francisco Giants in 2024, as the franchise has fallen into crisis with a record just shy of .500 for the third year in a row.

Recently, the organization made a major change as Buster Posey will take over as head of the team's baseball operations. As one of the best players in franchise history, the Giants are hoping Posey is the man to help them get back to the postseason.

For San Francisco to break this troubling trend of mediocrity, they must first examine what is wrong with the team. They were closer to average overall in 2024 because they have some talented pitchers and hitters.

If the Giants want to make what feels like a big leap and compete with the San Diego Padres and Los Angeles Dodgers, they have to make a splash.

ESPN.com's Bradford Doolittle recently talked about what the Giants need to do to improve the franchise and get out of the mediocrity in which they are stuck.

“Whether you look at win-loss record, run differential or any other statistical aspect of the game, this is a mediocre team. While we might decry the current playoff format as being too forgiving of mediocrity, you really can't accomplish anything if you're absolutely mediocre. Most importantly, the Giants' current era lacks clear, defining characteristics, as their rosters generally lack clear strengths or weaknesses, giving them a consistently high floor and low ceiling. The solution? Saying the Giants should sign a franchise player is easy; We do that every year. But it’s really the obvious step.”

San Francisco has been trying to make a big move over the last few offseasons, as they have tried to bring in Aaron Judge and Shohei Ohtani in the last few free agent classes. Obviously the team didn't make it and was left without a star.

This season they signed third baseman Matt Chapman to a long-term contract. Although Chapman is a very good player, he is not a superstar.

With San Francisco free agency preparations already underway, they know for sure that one star will be available, and that is Juan Soto. Soto will be the big prize in free agency this offseason, and it looks like it will go to the highest bidder.

It will likely require a contract well over $500 million, but Soto is a young player and would give the Giants the face of the franchise for the next decade.
