The death of a dog in Naugatuck Cemetery is being investigated as a crime

NAUGATUCK, CT (WFSB) – The death of a dog found in a Naugatuck cemetery has been investigated as a crime, according to police.

Police said animal control was contacted about 9:45 a.m. Friday by the caretaker of Hillside Cemetery on High Street.

The caretaker reported that an extremely malnourished and emaciated gray and white Staffordshire terrier was found on the cemetery grounds.

“The dog is estimated to be between 6 and 8 months old based on its size and 2 to 6 years old based on its teeth, but we cannot confirm an exact age due to the severity of the dog's medical condition,” Naugatuck police said. “The dog appears to have passed away overnight until early morning.”

Investigators from Naugatuck Animal Control and the Naugatuck Police Department arrived and said they were treating the location as a crime scene due to the extremely poor condition of the dog and the general circumstances.

Anyone with information about the person responsible was asked to contact animal control at [email protected] or 203-729-4324. The confidential police tip line also could be reached at 203-720-1010.

Police said advocacy group Desmond's Army is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest, prosecution and conviction of the person(s) responsible.

As of Wednesday, October 2nd, the reward should expire in 90 days.
