Here's a recent MLB story from The Associated Press:

BALTIMORE (AP) — Corbin Burnes threw one masterful cutter after another, sailing through the Kansas City Royals' order like the ace he was all season for the Baltimore Orioles.

A costly error in the sixth inning paved the way to a painful postseason loss.

Burnes walked No. 9 hitter Maikel Garcia, who then singled for second and advanced to third on a groundout. Bobby Witt Jr.'s soft-hit single to left field was the only run of the game, and the Orioles were on the verge of an early exit with a 1-0 loss in Game 1 of their AL Wild Card Series on Tuesday.

“The walk hurt,” Burnes said. “The walk cost us the game.”

It was the only walk issued in more than eight innings by the 2021 NL Cy Young Award winner, a soon-to-be free agent who turned in some of his best performances in what could be his final start for Baltimore. Burnes allowed just five hits, struck out three and was left to regret not getting Garcia out at the game's crucial moment.

“If I attack him a little better and don't walk him, we can get through this, 0-0 in the ball game and we have a chance,” said Burnes, who got popouts from Witt in the first two games of the AL batting champions. Bats. “He didn’t hit it very hard. It just found a hole and that was the difference in the game.”

Burnes did just about everything he had to do to give the Orioles a win from a spot in the Division Series against the New York Yankees, earning rave reviews from teammates and opponents alike.

“Unbelievable,” said Zach Eflin, who will start for Baltimore in Game 2 on Wednesday. “He set the tone right from the pitch. That’s what a No. 1 does. He’s done it all year and his entire career.”

The Royals' leadoff hitter Michael Massey opened the game with a single before Burnes struck out the next 12 batters and looked like he was stranded. Other than that, not much bothered him.

“He’s got some really good stuff,” Massey said. “He is a good competitor. He changes speed. He works in and out. His things move late. You think it’s going to be in one place and you swing there – and it’s not there.”

After Burnes, who allowed 41 runners to steal a base from him during the regular season, struck out Garcia, manager Brandon Hyde said he would leave it to his pitcher to decide whether to intentionally walk Witt and face Vinnie Pasquantino, who came back surgery on the right thumb. Catcher James McCann never thought about it.

“No, not really,” McCann said. “Not with Burnes.”

The soon-to-be 30-year-old right-hander went eight innings and became the first starter to throw a pitch in the ninth of the playoffs since Washington's Stephen Strasburg in Game 6 of the 2019 World Series against Houston. Garcia singled out Burnes and gave him a standing ovation.

“He did his part, an absolutely fantastic pitch,” Hyde said. “(He) showed me what kind of pitcher he is all year long, and he stepped it up even more in this game.”
