Victor Hedman's donation highlights Lightning's community kickoff

Hedman's own home was not affected by the storm, but thousands around the bay are still displaced, without power, without a home. Among the rebuilders are 11 Tampa Police Department families, some of whom were there Tuesday afternoon to finally hear the good news.

“We got the message out that we have officers in need,” Police Chief Lee Bercaw said Tuesday. “And now our first responders are standing right next to me.”

The Lightning captain responded along with Mayor Jane Castor, who was in attendance.

“This hurricane has affected a lot of people and you still have to put your lives at risk,” Hedman noted. “Coming home and seeing our homes destroyed… was just heartbreaking for us. We’re happy to do whatever we can to support you.”

Of course, the afternoon couldn't end without taking a comprehensive tour of the police department and quickly boosting officer morale. Luckily, none of them had to be arrested after Nick Paul got his hands on the office Nerf Rage Fire.
