SANTA CLARA – Rookie wide receiver Ricky Pearsall's return to the practice field will have to wait at least another week.

The 49ers opted Wednesday to allow Pearsall to continue physical therapy instead of opening his practice window.

Pearsall remains on the reserve/non-football injury list following an incident on August 31 in which he was the victim of a shooting during an armed robbery.

Pearsall remained in the hospital for less than 24 hours because the bullet entered his right chest area and exited the back near his armpit without hitting any vital organs.

After about a week's break from physical activity, Pearsall works out regularly and attends meetings at the 49ers' practice facility.

On Monday, Shanahan didn't rule out the possibility that the 49ers could open the practice window for Pearsall. He was forced to miss at least the first four games of the regular season.

Shanahan said the club would find out how quickly it could proceed with Pearsall's football activities once it was cleared to resume training.

“We’ll see when he comes back to practice and we’ll judge based on that,” Shanahan said. “I really don’t judge until I see how the boys do the week of training.

“I’m happy every time the guys come off IR just to get them back into practice. And this is really the first time you see how they do football and you kind of make the decision as the week goes on.”

The 49ers selected Pearsall with the No. 31 pick in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft.

San Francisco placed him on the non-football injured list on September 2, a week before the team's season opener against the New York Jets. He had to sit out the first four games. This week marks the first week the 49ers have been able to open its practice window.

The 49ers play the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday at Levi's Stadium. Then the club has a short turnaround time to play a Thursday night game at the Seattle Seahawks on October 10th.
