There have been several reports of Kearns High School students being robbed at gunpoint

KEARNS – Police are investigating at least four cases in which Kearns High School students were robbed at gunpoint right outside the school.

Detective Angie Oldham of the Unified Police Department said the robberies have occurred on the train tracks east of the high school over the past three weeks, with the last report dated Sept. 27.

“Some victims called and reported that they were held at gunpoint and robbed of their personal items, including shoes,” Oldham said. “Phones, credit cards, money, anything like that, anything of value that the students have with them, these suspects take with them.”

Police believe the students are crossing the train tracks as a shortcut to get to and from school and are asking them not to walk on the train tracks. This is not just because of the robberies, but also because it is private property and students are technically trespassing.

“That is why we have asked all parents and children to stop using these train tracks as sidewalks. It’s not safe,” Oldham said. “Union Pacific erected a fence that was damaged by a parent so the children could still cross it.”

Oldham said investigators have located two suspects but are still looking for others. The primary suspect in the first two cases was a juvenile, but it is unknown whether he attended Kearns High School.

Police are still searching for the suspect in the two most recent robberies, who could be 18 to 20 years old, white or Hispanic and speaks Spanish and English.
