App State Operations Update October 2, 2024

For App State Boone and Hickory campuses, classes will not be held until after Tuesday, October 15th. Severe Weather Condition 3 (Closure) has been extended until 5pm on Friday, October 11th. Residence halls, dining facilities and on-campus medical facilities will remain open . Off-campus students, faculty and staff requiring accommodations should call 1-800-RED-CROSS (733-2767). Faculty, staff and students can visit the university's resources website.

Classes at App State Boone and Hickory campuses are canceled and Severe Weather Condition 3 (Closure) is in effect until Friday, October 11th, 5 p.m.

Due to the fall break, classes will not resume until October 16th at the earliest. The modality and locations will be determined based on the conditions and infrastructure An update will be released by Wednesday, October 9th.

Road conditions vary and many roads in the area remain treacherous or impassable. Please limit your travel and use extreme caution when traveling on foot or by vehicle. Information about the curfew in Watauga County can be found here.

On the Boone campus, Residence halls, the central cafeteria, campus markets, the student union, the student health service and the student leisure center remain open and ready for operation.

  • No dormitory is structurally impaired.
  • Vehicles will not be towed Unless they block rescue workers or access to fire hydrants. However, some vehicles will be moved at no cost to the owner if they are not drivable and are in areas where flood damage is being repaired.

Emergency crews have cordoned off hazardous areas and areas on the Boone campus that they are working to restore.Please stay away from these areas.

Off-campus students, faculty and staff requiring accommodations should call 1-800-RED-CROSS (733-2767). The Red Cross also accepts donations at this telephone number.

For lecturers, staff and studentsA resource information website provides important details, including information on:

  • FEMA assistance for homeowners and renters
  • A Disaster Relief Resource Center located on the 3rd floor of the Plemmons Student Union with access to resources, information and support.
  • Showers, laundry facilities and ITS support.
  • Medical and counseling resources.
  • How to volunteer.

The university continues to provide free hot meals to anyone who needs them. Public WiFi is available at several campus locations.

An App State Disaster Relief Recovery Fund was founded to support students, faculty and staff. The best way to share this with others is to share the link to the university homepage: appstate.edu.

The severe weather policy under condition 3 (closure) means:

  1. Due to the significant and ongoing emergency, all university facilities are closed until further notice Residence Halls, Central Dining Hall, Campus Markets, Student Union, Student Recreation Center and Student Health Services.
  2. A limited number of mandatory employees may be ordered to remain at work or report to work under this condition. This is intended to ensure an orderly closure of campus facilities and to maintain only the most critical supplies and services on campus.
  3. All other employees, including those otherwise referred to as mandatory employees but who are not required for the event in question, are not permitted to report to or remain at work. This also includes the faculty. If you have any questions, please contact your direct supervisor.
  4. Employees are not required to accrue vacation or make up missed work time during a Condition 3 eventunless the duration of the event requires a different decision by order of the President or by order of the Governor.

Please note that the UNC System approved Condition 3 for payroll purposes retroactive to Thursday, September 26th.
