Field hockey loses the contest 5-2 to #12 Wesleyan

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Thanks to a four-goal, second-half effort from No. 12 Wesleyan University, the Cardinals defeated the Union College field hockey team 5-2 in a non-conference game Wednesday night at Hicks Field.

Second semester Maddie Greco And Rachel Ostiguy scored one goal in the second period and one in the fourth for Union (6-4). Georgia Adams scored two goals to pace Wesleyan (7-2) to victory.

The Cardinals opened the scoring 7:53 into the first frame when Sarah Porter overcame the defense and fired the ball just under the post, her fourth goal of the year. Union limited Wesleyan to just two shots in the first frame, while putting one into the opponent's net.

Less than a minute into the second period, Union scored Greco's 10th goal in the team's 10th game. Junior Megan Dorsey weaved through several Cardinals before passing forward to Greco, who once fired a shot inside the near post to reach double figures for the second straight game. In the second stanza, the visitors outscored the home team 3-2 and equalized four shots each at halftime.

The Cardinals took control again with two goals in the third quarter, with Imana Ochieng and Adams scoring 2:10 apart to take a 3-1 lead into the fourth frame. Adams and Kenzie Mauro extended the Wesleyan lead to 5-1 before Ostiguy scored on a freshman pass with 2:56 left Astoria Rix.

Wesleyan finished the game with a 16-11 edge in shots and scored ten corners compared to Union's corners. Junior Sophie Brady made five saves in the first 53:52 of the game before the freshman Tess Parker stopped the only three shots on goal she faced in the final in 6:08 minutes.

Union, whose four losses this year have all come to nationally ranked opponents, will face a third consecutive NFHCA squad on Saturday when the Garnet Chargers take on #18 University in a Liberty League match at Frank Bailey Field at 3 p.m of Rochester received Bertagna Stadium Class of 1985.
