HEB is preparing for the dock workers' strike and ensuring continued supplies

SAN ANTONIO – Some people in San Antonio are sweating over the toilet paper strike.

With port workers on the East Coast and Texas striking, HEB assures customers that “the port strike is not expected to impact customers.”

Due to the recent port strike, empty shelves are now starting to form in stores like HEB.

People are panicking and buying things like toilet paper, paper towels and water in fear of the US longshoremen's dock strike.

The strike went into effect on October 1 and halted most of the country's shipping, impacting people from ports as far away as Texas.

Shopper Ceci Mora says she is worried and will stock up on essentials for her family, not knowing how long this strike will last.

“We will stock up on toilet paper, medicine, laundry detergent and paper towels. “A larger amount, a larger amount until we can be OK for a few weeks, just depending on how long the strike lasts,” Mora said.

It may feel like we're back in 2020, but that's what's happening now.

“Somehow I think it's like we're 10 steps ahead and 20 steps behind. The way the economy is hitting us, prices are going up, it's like a roller coaster ride, you go up and then you go down,” she added.

Not everyone is worried.

“I heard that a lot of people buy a lot of toilet paper, but the toilet paper is made here in the United States. I don’t see the point in doing any of this,” Ryanna Johnson said.

“I praise the people who go on strike and demand what they want. I just hope it doesn’t wear off and has a long-term impact on us,” she added.

We also contacted Walmart and Target but have not received a response.

HEB released a statement on the supply chain shortage, saying: “At HEB, we regularly prepare for possible supply chain situations. We currently do not expect the port strike to have any impact on our customers. Our team has been working with suppliers for weeks to serve them.” Most products are not affected by this strike. Our stores receive deliveries and are in a strong position that allows our partners to restock shelves throughout the day.
