CHICAGO (CBS) — A shooting on the Stevenson Expressway in the city's southwest left one person injured and caused a massive traffic jam in the approach lanes that began during Wednesday's evening rush.

Illinois State Police said they responded to a report of shots fired in the area of ​​northbound Interstate 55 at Pulaski Road at 6:16 p.m.

After the shooting, three of four lanes were closed.

CBS Skywatch was over the scene where several emergency vehicles were in the area and a white sport utility vehicle was seen pulling off the roadway in front of a light pole it had crashed into. Officers were seen searching the area surrounding the crime scene.

It was not clear how many people were in the SUV. But the audio of the news broadcast showed that a person was seen lying on the street.

One victim was taken to an area hospital with injuries, but state police did not release details of the injuries. It was also not clear late Wednesday how that person was doing.

Illinois State Police have not released information about the vehicle used by the shooters. However, since the shooting occurred in the middle of rush hour, it is unlikely that the vehicle made a quick escape.

So far in 2024 there have been 62 in the Chicago area Freeway shootings. This time last year there were 92 shootings – the total for 2023 has been 110.

While Freeway shootings Dan Ryan, Bishop Ford and Stevenson Expressways are the three major highways leading the troubling crime trend.

After the shooting, traffic was only allowed through on the left shoulder of Stevenson entering after the shooting. Inbound traffic was diverted off the highway at Pulaski Road and re-entered at Kedzie Avenue.

The Chicago Office of Emergency Management and Communications advised motorists to seek an alternate route. As of 10 p.m., it was not known how long the traffic delay would last.
