Abbas rewards Abia Rep with “juicy” committee to abolish PDP for APC – Politics – The Guardian Nigeria News – Nigeria and World News

A member of the House of Representatives representing Ukwa East/Ukwa West Federal Constituency of Abia State under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Christian Nkwonta, yesterday defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Nkwonta announced his resignation in a letter to House Speaker Abbas Tajudeen, which was read out in plenary. Tajudeen said the MP cited a crisis within his former party as the reason for his decision.

However, as usual, Deputy Minority Leader Aliyu Madaki raised a point of order, citing Section 68 of the Constitution. He said the seat should be declared vacant under Section 68. The point of order was lifted by the Speaker, who welcomed Nkwonta to the APC.

Immediately thereafter, the Speaker appointed Nkwonta as chairman of the newly formed House Committee on South East Development Commission (SEDC).

The Speaker also announced other new committee chairs and their deputies, including: Timehin Adelegbe as Chair of the Committee on Scientific Research Institutions; Kabiru Ahmadi Mai Palace as Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Sports; Abubakar Gummi as Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on the North East Development Commission (NEDC) and Kama Nkemkanma as Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Climate Change and Security.

Others included Mohammed Mukthar as Chairman of the Tourism Committee; Zakariya Idris will be chairman of the Safety Standards Committee and Anayo Onwuegbu will be chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Lake Chad.
