1 seriously injured in shooting on I-55, CFD says; IB lanes closed

One person was critically injured in a shooting on the I-55 freeway, Chicago fire officials said. Lanes in Pulaski will remain closed from 10 p.m

CHICAGO (WLS) – One person was critically injured in a shooting on the Stevenson Expressway near Pulaski Road Wednesday night, according to the Chicago Fire Department. The lanes are closed due to the investigation.

Chicago's Office of Emergency Management and Communications announced the lane closures on Twitter shortly after 6:30 p.m

Illinois State Police said they responded to the area after a report of shots fired. According to state police, one victim was taken to an area hospital with injuries. Chicago Fire Department officials said an adult was shot and taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital in critical condition.

Three and a half hours after the shooting was reported, a large police presence remained along the mile-long closed stretch of I-55. Officers were seen walking the highway with flashlights, searching for bullet casings or other evidence.

Two damaged cars could be seen on the side of the road, surrounded by police officers. Traffic was backed up for a mile and was being diverted off the highway at Pulaski.

Drivers should seek an alternative route.

No further information was available, state police said.
