While new San Francisco Giants president Buster Posey received widespread praise for Matt Chapman's contract extension last week, one prominent MLB insider isn't buying these rumors.

There have been some serious changes at the top of the Giants front office in the last few days. After six seasons with the franchise, San Francisco relieved Farhan Zaidi of his role as head of baseball operations this week. It was a move that had been rumored for some time.

And surprisingly, seven-time All-Star Buster Posey will take over the position. The Giants legend served on the team's board of directors but has no experience leading a major organization. However, he was likely a favorite for the role after reportedly negotiating a contract extension with third baseman Matt Chapman after Zaidi made little progress with his replacement.

It was a startling rumor and seemed to be a nail in the coffin for Zaidi's tenure with the franchise. Still, some around the league don't believe the legendary catcher came out of the boardroom to negotiate a contract with Champman's agent, Scott Boras.

Jon Heyman says the new San Francisco Giants president doesn't deserve the recognition he's been receiving lately

“I saw Posey being blamed for this [the Chapman] Signing. I think he was overrated,” MLB insider Jon Heyman said during a stream Bleacher Report. “We'll see. Derek Jeter had a chance to lead an organization; it didn't work. I don't want to say he wasn't ready. The Giants have high hopes for Buster Posey and hope things can work out.

“…They're going to get a GM and they need someone with experience because as smart as Buster Posey is and as great a baseball player as he is, he doesn't have any experience. And I don't care if he gets credit for signing Matt Chapman. I mean, please come. There's no way it happened like that. Scott Boras and Farhan Zaidi made this deal. Let’s be honest here.”

The former San Francisco Giants president has been on the hot seat for some time after failing in free agency in previous offseasons. Before the 2024 MLB season, he acquired Chapman and reigning NL Cy Young Blake Snell. However, the team still had a losing record this year.
