49ers News: Welcome back, Kalia Davis

Kyle Shanahan previews the Week 5 game between the 49ers and Cardinals

“San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke to reporters before practice on Wednesday as the team prepares for its Week 5 game against the Arizona Cardinals. Here’s everything he shared.”

49ers injuries: Shanahan optimistic about return

“On Wednesday, Kalia Davis returned to practice with her return to practice window open. Shanahan was optimistic he would return to the field Sunday.

Meanwhile, Ricky Pearsall remains out. Shanahan said his shoulder injury was repaired before he was placed on the reserve/non-football injured list but that the 49ers don't believe he is ready. He declined to go into further detail.

San Francisco also signed Jalen Graham from the Commanders' practice squad to its active roster and made some practice squad changes. They added defensive lineman Jonathan Garvin and wide receiver Terique Owens and cut defensive tackle Shakel Brown.”

Silver: Should the 49ers trade Brandon Aiyuk for Davante Adams from the Raiders? Why It Could Be a Win-Win Situation (Paywall)

“Yes, I know Shanahan tried to downplay the incident when questioned by me and others, but I don't buy it. Because the commotion occurred during the portion of practice reserved for reporters, there was video, and as players and coaches always say at every NFL facility I've ever been to, “Film doesn't lie.”

What my eyes told me was that Shanahan was just as excited as he was as Aiyuk was prone to noticeable emotional mood swings during the hold-in, and that Aiyuk – throwing his gloves and cleats, dropped his pants and tried to get the shorts off throwing himself leg like Jake Moody, who hit a (not so) “Dynamic Kickoff” out of the end zone – couldn’t contain his extreme displeasure at the edict.

While we can debate the merits of the rule itself and whether Shanahan should be concerned about whether Aiyuk wears red or black shorts during practice, those aren't the main questions. The bottom line is that Shanahan is the boss and Aiyuk knew what he was doing by acting in full view of the media.

For the record, if I had just gotten a $120 million extension and my boss wanted me to put on a clown costume, a pink tutu, or (gasp) a USC sweatshirt, I would suck it up and start shopping.”

CMC's father explains the cause of the 49ers star's Achilles tendonitis

“Tendinitis is an overtraining injury, meaning you train too hard or do too much and it develops into tendinitis,” Ed McCaffrey, Christian’s father, said on the “Ross Tucker Football Podcast.”

“If I would say Christian has a weakness, it is that sometimes he has to protect himself from himself by training too much and doing too much… If you have tendonitis, you have tendonitis,” Ed McCaffrey said. “I think of it as tennis elbow. You see tennis players getting affected by it and not being able to play tennis for a while until it heals. He has it in his Achilles tendon. It started with one, then it creeps into your calf and you start to overcompensate for it, and then you feel it with the other too. It's just tendonitis. It just means it hurts really, really bad.”

Where the 49ers are on the list of potential Adams trade candidates

“Meanwhile, Adams' contract calls for salaries of more than $17 million this year, $36 million next year and $37 million in 2026. These numbers can of course be restructured, but it doesn't seem worth the effort.

After all, the 49ers have many other ways to use future money.

Quarterback Brock Purdy in particular is entitled to a new contract in the offseason. He is currently the team's 46th highest-paid player. With his next contract, Purdy will become one of the highest-paid players in the NFL.

The 49ers also have a list of scheduled free agents looking to cash in: cornerbacks Charvarius Ward and Deommodore Lenoir, linebacker Dre Greenlaw, safety Talanoa Hufanga and guard Aaron Banks.

The 49ers have no need for a wide receiver.”

The 49ers won't open Pearsall's practice window until Week 5

“We’ll see when he comes back to practice and we’ll judge based on that,” Shanahan said. “I really don’t judge until I see how the boys do the week of training.

“I’m happy every time the guys come off IR just to get them back into practice. And this is really the first time you see how they do football and you kind of make the decision as the week goes on.”
