Tyler Named America's Best City to Retire | East Texas

TYLER, Texas – Of the 329 cities considered, USA Today ranked Tyler as the No. 1 place for retirees in 2024.

“Tyler, Texas, was named the best city in Texas in a separate USA TODAY Homefront study and is also the best city for retirees,” the article said.

The cities' rose-based beauty played a role in pushing voters to the top of the rankings, but tax friendliness, health care availability and cost of living secured Tyler's spot at the top. Attractions like Lake Tyler and the Caldwell Zoo also win the city favor from voters.

“All Texans are exempt from retirement income tax, but Tyler residents can also enjoy affordable housing. According to Zillow, a typical home costs $257,181 (29% less than a typical U.S. home),” the article states. “Prices are also 7.7% below the national average.”

The low crime rate and low traffic volume were the icing on the cake of the Rose City.

Tyler wasn't the only city that ranked in the top ten for retirees, other Texas cities included:

  • Sugar Land, Texas (No. 6)
  • Wichita Falls, Texas (No. 8)
  • Abilene, Texas (No. 9)
  • McAllen, Texas (No. 10)
