Philadelphia man charged with murder in Atlantic City shooting

MAYS LANDING, NJ — A Philadelphia man has been indicted by an Atlantic County grand jury on murder, attempted murder and weapons charges in connection with the fatal shooting of one woman and the serious wounding of another in Atlantic City in August, officials said Wednesday.

Gregg Page, 34, of Philadelphia, is accused of shooting two women near 60 North Main Avenue in Atlantic City in the early morning hours of Thursday, August 1st. One of the victims, Carley Elbert, 32, of Sewell, New Jersey, was found unconscious with a gunshot wound to the head and was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said. The second victim, Kamille Stewart, 29, of Pleasantville, New Jersey, was found conscious but critically injured with multiple gunshot wounds and transported to AtlantiCare Medical Center.

Two other men, Ryan Schenck, 30, and Ramir Schenck, 27, both of Philadelphia, were also charged with hindering apprehension in connection with the crimes. Investigators believe the brothers were with Page the night of the shooting.

Atlantic City police responded to the scene around 4:41 a.m. and discovered the two women near the boardwalk along the boardwalk. An investigation led authorities to Philadelphia later that day, where Page and the Schenck brothers were arrested.

The investigation was conducted by the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office Major Crimes Unit and the Atlantic City Police Department, with assistance from the Philadelphia Police Department and the FBI Philadelphia Office.

Anyone with information about the case is urged to contact the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office or Crime Stoppers, which is offering cash rewards for tips leading to arrests and indictments.

  • Newark businessman pleads guilty to bribing a former city official

NEWARK, NJ – A Newark business owner admitted in federal court Wednesday to bribing a former high-ranking city official in exchange for assistance in acquiring and redeveloping Newark properties, U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger announced.

Irwin Sablosky, 64, of Springfield, New Jersey, pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Madeline Cox Arleo to honest services fraud and bribery. Sablosky admitted to providing cash and luxury jewelry to Carmelo Garcia, a former Newark deputy mayor and director of the Newark Department of Economic and Housing Development, in exchange for Garcia's help in acquiring city properties for redevelopment.

“Sablosky distorted the public official’s independent judgment and violated the public’s trust for his own financial gain,” U.S. Attorney Sellinger said in a statement. “Our office will continue to work with law enforcement to protect the people of New Jersey from public officials and those who bribe them.”

The bribery scheme, which spanned from 2017 to 2019, involved Sablosky and co-defendant Frank Valvano Jr., 56, of Florham Park, New Jersey, who provided Garcia with cash payments and gifts of high-end watches and necklaces. In return, Garcia used his influence within Newark and its development company, the Newark Community Economic Development Corporation (NCEDC), to promote their real estate interests.

In one case, in June 2018, Sablosky and Valvano provided $25,000 in cash to Garcia, then Newark's deputy mayor, through an intermediary, court records show. Phone records and text messages showed frequent communication between the trio, with Garcia coordinating the bribe payments.

The honest services fraud charge carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison, while the bribery charge carries a maximum sentence of 10 years. Each charge could also carry fines of $250,000 or twice the financial gain from the crime. Sablosky is scheduled to be sentenced on February 20, 2025.

Garcia, 59, of Hoboken, New Jersey, previously pleaded guilty to similar charges, including conspiring to defraud the city of Newark and accepting bribes. His sentencing is still pending. Valvano's case is ongoing.

The case was investigated by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's Office of Inspector General and the IRS Criminal Investigation Division.
