The League of Women Voters of Amarillo emphasizes the importance of educating young voters

AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) – The voter registration deadline is just around the corner and the League of Women Voters (LWV) is emphasizing the importance of helping young community members prepare to vote.

The organization provides information about the candidates, sample ballots and how voting machines work.

“Make sure you study what’s on the ballot and who’s on the ballot and read about it, read about it, think about it, vote about it and then go vote after studying that,” said Sonya Letson, former president of the League of Women Voters.

According to the LWV, the organization has helped register around 429 young people and has expanded to the outskirts.

Letson said her goal is to reach young people who are willing and able to vote, educate and register.

“We're increasing in registration, it's changing a little bit as the population changes, Potter County is losing population, Randall County is gaining, so Randall County has a lot more voters,” said Michelle Hoggatt, co-president of the League of Women voters.

LWV says they plan to be at the Santa Fe building on the deadline for registration of Potter County residents.

Further information about voter registration can be found on the LWV website.

The deadline to register to vote is October 7th.
