Governor signs law allowing live events at cannabis cafes and other measures

Sacramento, California: Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom has signed several marijuana-related laws into law, including a bill backed by California's NORML to expand services at on-site cannabis consumption lounges.

The newly signed law, effective January 1, 2024, allows on-site establishments to expand their operations to include the sale of non-cannabis-infused food and beverages, as well as tickets to live performances.

Dale Gieringer, Director of California NORML, praised Governor Newsom's decision to sign the bill and stated, “We thank Governor Newsom for the much-needed support of the social use of cannabis by California's consumers, as well as for the support of the state's cannabis industry this way.”

California is among the few states that license and regulate lounges for on-site cannabis consumption.

The governor also signed a separate bill to expand cannabis donation programs and change the way local governments impose certain taxes on cannabis retailers (SB 1059). He vetoed a bill (AB 1111) that would have allowed certain property owners to sell cannabis at farmers markets.
