Wood's late winner gives App State its third straight win – The Appalachian

After a 2-1 win in the conference opener against Georgia Southern, App State Soccer traveled to Lafayette, Louisiana to take on the Ragin' Cajuns. The Mountaineers have dominated in recent games, winning seven of the eight games against Louisiana.

The game started very slowly, with only seven combined shots in the first half, five by App State and two by Louisiana. Both teams only had one shot on goal and both attempts were saved.

It was similar at the start of the second half. App State took more shots, but neither team found the net. Until freshman defender Sydney Snowden passed a ball to graduate student forward Izzi Wood, who fired a shot from outside the box in the 84th minute that shuffled into the top corner for the first and only goal of the game. It was Woods' sixth goal of the season.

The final whistle sounded as App State earned a huge 1-0 win to remain perfect in conference play.

The Mountaineers took 11 shots in the game, three of which hit the goal. Louisiana fired four shots in the contest, two of which were on goal. Both goalies made two saves, with App State redshirt freshman goalkeeper Sarah Wommack keeping a clean sheet.

App State committed 16 fouls in the game compared to Louisiana's 13. However, the Ragin' Cajuns committed nine of their 13 fouls in the second half, compared to seven in the Mountaineers' second half.

App State travels to Charlotte to compete on Friday Georgia Condition after game was moved due to damage hurricane Helene. The Mountaineers won their last game against the Panthers in 2023 and will look to continue their winning streak against them. The game begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Queens Sports Complex at Queens University.
