Increasing drought

Texas is hot and dry! For how long?

Most of Texas will experience a week of dry weather. The dry weather will be accompanied by above-average temperatures, which could worsen drought in some parts of the state.

A comparison of the latest drought monitor with the one released in late August shows levels worsening in parts of North Texas, from Childress to Dallas. Drought has also increased across much of Southeast Texas, particularly around the San Jacinto River and surrounding counties. West Texas continues to struggle with the most severe drought in Van Horn Pecos and Marfaaround the I-10 region, where this value has prevailed since the end of July.

High pressure will continue to impact the chance of rain and storms this week. With more sunshine, temperatures will be comfortably warm across much of the state and many cities will be warmer. Austin could be close to matching or tying the old record of 97 degrees. Thursday will also be very hot for the Metroplex as afternoon temperatures are expected to exceed the mid-90s.

Southeast Texas will have a front that may retreat north along with an upper level disturbance that will increase cloud cover from the south and form some showers. The clouds and breeze will keep afternoon temperatures in the upper 80s. This upper level disturbance could trigger a single storm extending inland San Antonio and Austin, especially on Saturday.

The next front will sweep across the Lone Star State on Monday. The big changes will be felt in the northern half of Texas, where fresh air could filter southward enough to keep lows in the 50s and highs in the low to mid 80s. It will be a good foretaste of autumn. The front will increase the chance of rain for central and southeastern Texas with isolated showers, but there will be a slight drop in temperatures through the middle of next week.
