Men's golf ends season opener at Gate City Invite

Greensboro, North Carolina – The University of Lynchburg men's golf team opened its fall competition with the Gate City Invite hosted by Greensboro and finished 13th out of 18 teams fielded with a team score of +3 last Monday and Tuesday.

“It was great to be back on track and competing again!” said Allen Smith, head men's golf coach. “We didn’t have our best this week, but we saw a lot of positives and are really looking forward to our next tournament in Douglasville, Georgia.”

After shaking off some rust with a team score of +9 in the first round of the competition, the Hornets bounced back in good form and finished the second round with a team score of -1. The third and final round of play was Lynchburg's best performance of the invitational round as they finished with a team score of -5.

Junior Alan Van Asch highlighted the Hornets' performance with a -1 final score, placing them 23rd overall. Van Asch handled the invitation with consistency, finishing the first two rounds evenly and finishing the last round with a -1 score. Freshmen Cooper micelle delivered the best single-round performance on the Hornet squad with a score of -5 in the third round of the invitational. Mizelle was second on the team individually and placed 38th overall with a score of +1 in all three rounds.

The Lynchburg men's golf team has officially launched its 2024 fall schedule. Next up for the Hornets is the West Pines Invitational at West Pines Golf Club, hosted by Oglethorphe. Lynchburg travels to Douglasville, Georgia for the invitational from Monday, October 7th to Wednesday, October 9th.
