Windows 11 24H2 is finally here and Microsoft calls it a “full OS swap,” it’s just a shame the new Windows update still has Recall

Microsoft was busy. Apparently so does the rest of the tech industry. I leave the room for what feels like a second and everything is “AI this” and “AI that”. Now Microsoft is introducing a so-called “complete operating system replacement” that is apparently intended to pave the way for AI.

Yes, Windows 11 24H2 is finally here – at least for those included in the first update rollout segment – and it has some surprisingly nice features. I say “surprising” because all the talk about Windows Recall really turned me off from 24H2 and its many pre-release Insider Preview builds. And because it seems a little buggy (via Windows Latest)

Still, the new version of Windows 11 actually has some pretty cool features – although whether this justifies being called a “full operating system swap” is questionable. Here are some of my favorite features included in the update:

Wi-Fi 7 support
“A Wi-Fi network update button along with a scanning progress bar to help you find the networks you need.”
“Clear labels in the context menu indicate actions such as cut, copy, paste, rename, share and delete, simplifying your daily tasks.”
The ability to “easily drag files between breadcrumbs in the File Explorer address bar.”
Sudo for Windows
In Task Manager, “the DDR speed units have been updated from MHz to MT/s for more accurate readings.”

The latter in particular is a breath of fresh air for hardware nerds like me. And I'm someone who, until recently, was completely on the “MHz” bandwagon, much to the annoyance of the other hardware folks here at PC Gamer. But it's wrong, okay? If I accepted it, you can too.

Although I don't care much for the update, this supposed “complete operating system change” appears to be primarily about AI, as Microsoft begins its presentation by saying that it “includes new fundamental elements required to “To deliver transformative AI experiences and exceptional performance.” .”

Microsoft also states that it aims to “improve connectivity with the introduction of Wi-Fi 7, increase productivity with new quick settings, and improve accessibility with support for advanced hearing aid devices.” Energy consumption.” So not all AI.

However, the MT/s thing is not mentioned. This is buried in the update note weeds. Too bad.

As nice as they are, DDR metrics and right-click menu options may also not be enough to convince users to upgrade given the potential bugs. These include BSODs for 11th Gen Intel systems caused by Intel audio drivers, unresponsive Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC) processes on some Intel platforms, and unresponsive fingerprint sensors.

Of course, these issues are very platform specific and may not occur to everyone, even on the affected platforms. And Win11 24H2 will roll out slowly, becoming available to more people over time, depending on, among other things, how Microsoft evaluates the different devices with the update.

However, given the recent errors surrounding Windows 11 Previews, I won't hold my breath.

Despite the associated backlash, 24H2 will continue to move forward *gulp* Windows Recall, the Black Mirror-like software that aims to record everything you do on your computer to give you AI-powered search and easier “recall.” It is available to Windows Insider participants. However, you should be able to disable the feature even if you cannot uninstall it.

In addition to Recall, 24H2 will also provide tons of other AI improvements for various applications and system settings, such as: B. Cocreator in Paint, Image Creator in Microsoft Photos, and Auto Super Resolution for AI-powered upscaling at the operating system level.

So what do you think? Are the new non-dystopian features worth the dystopian ones? I personally don't care too much about all this AI malarkey, and while a Wi-Fi refresh button and better right-click options are great, I'm not sure they allay my concerns about the recall.
