San Antonio man gets 20 years in prison for shooting teenager in 2021

SAN ANTONIO – A man pleaded no contest Tuesday to the 2021 murder of a teenager.

The judge sentenced Sammy Cruz Gutierrez to 20 years in prison for the shooting death of 19-year-old Avery Jacob Flores.

Flores was found shot to death in his vehicle on Briggs Avenue near Southwest Military Drive on the Southwest Side shortly after 12:30 a.m. on December 12, 2021.

According to the affidavit, Flores and Gutierrez had an argument and threatened each other during a FaceTime call. Flores then drove to Gutierrez's residence. As Flores exited his vehicle, Gutierrez allegedly opened fire on him from his front yard. The victim got back into his vehicle, but Gutierrez allegedly continued shooting, hitting Flores multiple times.

Police said no weapons were found on Flores. Gutierrez was later found at a neighbor's home and taken into custody.

According to investigators, the argument started over a girl Flores was dating. Gutierrez was her ex-boyfriend.
