Elimination of vehicle inspections in Texas in 2025

AUSTIN, Texas (KAUZ) – Texas is facing a big change to the process drivers must go through to legally register their vehicles.

The state parliament passed a bill effective January 1, 2025 that removes the requirement for a safety inspection. This process is replaced by a $7.50 inspection program replacement fee.

Drivers in Texas still need to stay up to date on vehicle registration, but now save themselves a trip to the mechanic for an inspection.

Newly purchased vehicles are subject to an initial inspection program replacement fee of $16.75.

The law applies to non-commercial vehicles, but commercial vehicles must still undergo inspection. Additionally, vehicles in emission districts must continue to pass emissions tests.
