Health expert warns about TikTok's viral Balkan breakfast trend

A health expert has raised concerns about the viral Balkan breakfast trend circulating on TikTok.

Thanks to a video posted by TikTok user @.dayi_, the Balkan breakfast trend has taken social media by storm. This Southeast European breakfast consists of a mix of meat, bread, cheese, and whole raw vegetables like peppers and cucumbers.

Many people have since shared videos of themselves enjoying raw or pickled vegetables, sausages and cheese. Some even complemented their feasts with dips like ajvar, a popular red pepper condiment from the Balkans.

The viral trend has drawn mixed reactions from some in the Balkans. Some claim it lacks authenticity while others claim it is common in their households.

Another problem related to the trend is the high fiber content in the dishes. TikToker robbsfilms admitted he couldn't stop “going to the bathroom” all day after the hearty, vegetable-filled meal.

The toilet problems have prompted some experts to warn those who want to try the food at home. Jamie Maitland, certified holistic nutritionist and founder of The Office Health, spoke to Delish about the risks associated with the high fiber content of a Balkan breakfast.

“Of course, fiber can increase satiety and aid digestion, but it can also cause bloating or stomach upset, especially if you're not used to it,” she explained. “Going from low to high fiber overnight can be a little tough on the stomach.”

Jamie described the trend as “reasonably healthy” as long as you choose high-quality ingredients that are free of anti-nutrients. “Pickles can be a great way to get vegetables, as long as they don't contain added sugar,” she explained.

“All in all, I wouldn't recommend this as a nutritious breakfast option to any of my clients,” she concluded. “Starting your day with highly processed bread can spike your insulin levels, which is not good for your pancreas.

“Raw peppers and cucumbers contain lectins, which can cause microtears in the intestinal lining, so it's best to peel and de-seed them.”

When it comes to cured meats, Jamie noted that they often contain high levels of sugar. Unless you're using homemade versions with no added sugar, she recommends avoiding low-quality meat.

This is just the latest TikTok trend that experts have warned about after a doctor warned about the viral “glass candy” trend that was causing burns in children.
