'Good Times' Star John Amos' Cause of Death Revealed, Daughter Admits She Learned About It From Press Reports

According to his death certificate obtained by Fox News Digital, John Amos died of heart failure in late August.

News of the Good Times actor's death was announced by his son. KC Amos on Tuesday, but his daughter Shannon Amos announced on her Instagram page on Wednesday that she didn't know her father had died until she read about it in the press.

“I'm at a loss for words… Our family received the heartbreaking news that my father, John Allen Amos Jr., transitioned on August 21st,” she wrote along with a video of herself joining Amos to “Dance With My Father” by Luther Vandross dances.”

She continued: “We are devastated and have many questions about how this happened 45 days ago, having learned about it through the media like many of you.”

“This should be a time to honor and celebrate his life, but we are struggling to navigate the wave of emotions and uncertainty that his death brings,” she added. “Still, there is some semblance of peace in knowing that my father is finally free.”

She said her family appreciated the “outpouring of love, calls and text messages.” Please continue to keep our family in your thoughts and prayers. Thank you.

On Tuesday, KC said in a statement shared with The Hollywood Reporter: “It is with deep sadness that I inform you that my father has changed. He was a man with the kindest heart and a heart of gold… and he was loved.” Many fans consider him their TV dad. His legacy will live on in his outstanding work as an actor.

According to Amos' death certificate, KC was listed as an informant, the person, usually a family member, who provides personal information about the deceased on the death certificate.

Amos, 84, played James Evans Sr. in the Norman Lear-produced sitcom “Good Times,” which ran from 1974 to 1979.

“This show was the most realistic depiction of the life of an African-American family that could live under these circumstances,” Amos told Time magazine in 2021 about the groundbreaking sitcom, which was the first to portray a two-parent Black family on TV.

He was also known for his roles in “Roots,” “Coming to America,” and “The West Wing.”

Last December, Amos described his family dynamic as “acrimonious” but said he loved his daughter.

“It's a little acrimonious right now, but no matter what you might read or hear in the newspaper or on that medium or that media platform,” he told People magazine at the time after Shannon accused KC of elder abuse against her father. “Suffice it to say we are still a family and we love each other and that is the bottom line.”

He added: “This is it [K.C.’s] Siblings, this is my daughter, my first child. I love her. KC loves his sister. I guess we just have a bitter relationship that is best described in the tabloids, but everything heals with time and the love is still there.”

Amos and KC also collaborated on a documentary about his life and relationship with his son called America's Dad.

“It encompasses my career, his career, our careers together,” Amos told People in February. “And it’s something that I think every father and son wants to see.”
