Singer MIA leaves her political performance during the San Fran Festival: “I've been canceled so many times”

During her final performance at the Portola Music Festival in San Francisco on Sunday, singer MIA got political.

During her performance, the British singer, whose real name is Mathangi “Maya” Arulpragasam, made several comments between songs addressing political figures or American politics.

“Before Nicki existed [Minaj]“It was MIA. Before there was Rihanna, there was MIA. Before there was Kamala Harris, there was MIA,” shouted MIA.

“We want freedom from everything, including politics and religion,” she continued.

After a few more songs, she called out Vice President Kamala Harris' name, drawing cheers from the crowd. She then shouted former President Trump's name but was booed.

“Yeah, and there’s no one else,” MIA remarked.

After another song, she offered more detailed commentary, criticizing efforts to play by “Democratic and Republican standards.”

“Some people were talking shit because it’s election time in America. They said, 'Oh Maya, suddenly you are no longer what you were in your life.' Just because I have to live according to democratic and republican standards, aren't the Lebanese refugees now? “I love Americans, I do,” MIA said.

She continued: “I canceled so many damn times, because of you, for you. Before you canceled Snowden, Maya was canceled. That was for the Americans, so I want to hear it.”

In August, MIA appeared to endorse Trump on X after he was endorsed by former presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy.

“Trump will lead America through the next four most difficult years, rooting out the weeds, and RFK will inherit America when God is ready to replant and rebuild righteously,” she wrote.

MIA has been a controversial figure in recent years, particularly because she has been outspoken about taboo topics. In 2022, she claimed that the biggest backlash she faced was becoming a Christian.

“The fact that the biggest backlash in my career and life that I experience after saying 'Jesus exists' is a revelation to me. People who control these apps would rather be a bad girl than a good girl,” she wrote on X.
