The ninth edition of the ICC Women's T20 World Cup begins on Thursday, October 3, with 'hosts' Bangladesh taking on Scotland in the tournament opener in Sharjah on Thursday. The tournament was originally due to be held in Bangladesh but was moved to the United Arab Emirates at the last minute by the ICC amid unrest in the South Asian country following violent protests that led to the fall of a Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government become.

Australia have won a record six of the eight editions of the tournament so far and will be strong favorites to win the title later this month.

The 10 teams participating in the competition were divided into two groups of five teams each. Group A consists of defending champions Australia as well as former finalists India (2020) and New Zealand (2009, 2010) as well as Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

In Group B, however, “hosts” Bangladesh join England and the West Indies, who won the tournament in 2009 and 2016 respectively. South Africa, who finished second on home soil last year, and Scotland are the other teams.

Each team plays the remaining four teams in their group once, and the top two teams in each group then advance to the semi-finals. The leader in one group meets the runner-up in the other and vice versa. The winners of the two semi-finals will then battle it out in the summit duel.

Venues

The tournament was initially scheduled to be held at the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium in Mirpur, Dhaka and the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium.

However, with the tournament moving to the United Arab Emirates, the matches will now take place at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium and Sharjah Cricket Stadium.
