RWE begins construction of a 450 MW energy storage facility in Texas

RWE has started construction of three battery energy storage systems (BESS) with a total capacity of 450 MW in Texas, USA.

The three BESS systems the company plans to build are called Crowned Heron 1 and 2 and Cartwheel 1.

Crowned Heron 1 and 2, each with a capacity of 150 MW (300 MWh), are located in Fort Bend County and are scheduled for completion in mid- and late 2025, respectively.

The Cartwheel project, which has identical capacity to the Crowned Heron facilities and is located in Sulfur Springs, is expected to be operational in mid-2025.

This project complements RWE's existing Bright Arrow solar and energy storage project announced earlier this year.

Together, these three facilities will provide 900 MWh of storage capacity, contributing to RWE's ambitious global goal of achieving 6 GW of battery storage capacity by 2030.

Once completed, the Crowned Heron 1 and 2 and Cartwheel BESS projects will provide essential energy storage capacity that will improve the stability and resiliency of the Electric Reliability Council of Texas' power grid.

With the latest projects, RWE is expanding its construction portfolio in Texas, California and Arizona to 931 MW.

Hanson Wood, head of RWE Clean Energy Development and Utility-Scale Renewables, said: “These battery storage projects represent a significant step in our ongoing commitment to improving Texas’ energy infrastructure while expanding our energy storage portfolio.”

“Once completed and operational, our Crowned Heron 1 and 2 and Cartwheel battery projects will serve as reliable energy storage solutions to improve grid stability and support the state’s rapidly growing renewable energy sector.”

In a related development, RWE has entered into a contract with Steelwind Nordenham to produce up to 300 monopile foundations for its European offshore wind projects.

Steelwind has committed to reserve capacity for 320,000 tonnes of steel at its Nordenham mill.

This allocation covers 24 months from 2027 and allows for the production of approximately 200 monopile foundations.

Last month, RWE began building a high-speed BESS at its Moerdijk power plant in the Netherlands.
