On Wednesday, the United Nations Security Council held an emergency meeting to address the escalating conflict in the Middle East.

Iran's U.N. ambassador said his country fired nearly 200 rockets into Israel on Tuesday to deter further Israeli violence, while his Israeli counterpart called the barrage an “unprecedented act of aggression.”

There has been an almost daily exchange of fire between Israel and Hezbollah across the border with Lebanon since the day after Hamas' cross-border attack on October 7, 2023, in which 1,200 Israelis were killed and 250 others were taken hostage. In response, Israel declared war on the militant group in Gaza. According to local health authorities, more than 41,000 Palestinians were killed in the area, and just over half of the dead were women and children.
