Verizon is shutting down its own messaging app in favor of Google Messages

For over a decade, Verizon had its own messaging app, separate from the usual suspects like iMessage and Google Messages, known as Verizon Messages or Message+. However, the app will soon disappear.

Starting next month, the Message+ app will no longer be available

Verizon has announced the gradual shutdown of its messaging app, with the full shutdown scheduled for November 7th. Android users are recommended to switch to Google Messages, while iPhone and iPad users are recommended to use iMessage. Once the Message+ app shuts down:

  • You cannot send or receive messages through the app.
  • Any messages scheduled to be sent on or after November 7, 2024 will not be sent.
  • The Message+ app will no longer be available for download from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.

Verizon Messages has over 100 million downloads on the Play Store. However, this is apparently not enough for the mobile phone provider to continue to support the app. When asked why Message+ gets the ax, Verizon explained that the messaging landscape is rapidly evolving and wants to provide users with the best possible experience, which means Rich Communications Service (RCS). RCS is the modern messaging protocol intended to replace the traditional SMS (Short Message Service) and MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service). It offers a more engaging and modern chat experience, especially in Google Messages. Starting with iOS 18, iPhone users can also communicate via RCS.

Therefore, Google Messages will be pre-installed on everyone from now on Verizon Android devices. The app has become increasingly popular lately and I wouldn't be surprised if it soon surpasses the current 1 billion user mark. I mean, not only Verizon Messages users are encouraged to make the switch, but Samsung recently dropped its own messaging app in favor of Google Messages on Galaxy phones.

As Google continues to push the envelope when it comes to AI, it is introducing new AI-powered features across its services, including the messaging app, making it even more attractive to users.
