Tesla responds to the “recall” of the Cybertruck reversing camera with a software update

Tesla has initiated a recall for the Cybetruck due to a possible delay in the vehicle's rearview camera system. The issue has already been addressed by Tesla in a free over-the-air (OTA) software update that began rolling out on September 18, 2024, although vehicle owner notification letters regarding the issue are expected to be sent on November 25, 2024.

According to a safety recall report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), a total of 27,185 Cybertrucks manufactured between November 13, 2023 and September 14, 2024 are affected by the recall. The problem is described as follows:

“On certain affected vehicles, under certain conditions, the vehicle system (including the rear view image) may not complete a shutdown process before the system is commanded to power up. If the driver initiates a reverse operation before the vehicle system completes shutdown and startup, the backup image may not be displayed within two seconds of engaging reverse gear as required by FMVSS 111, S6.2.3.”

According to the NHTSA Safety Recall Report, the backup camera on Tesla Cybertrucks affected by the issue may remain black for up to 6-8 seconds when the vehicle is placed in reverse. The problem could affect the driver's rear visibility and increase the risk of a collision.

Tesla said it discovered the issue on September 12, 2024 as part of its internal compliance audit for MY 2024 Tesla Cybertrucks. An investigation was conducted from September 13th to 19th during which the company conducted tests to reproduce the issue. Tesla completed its evaluation on September 19 and a voluntary recall was initiated due to the Cybertruck's backup camera lag.

As of September 25, 2024, Tesla has identified 45 warranty claims and four testimonials that may be related to the issue. The company said it is not aware of any accidents, deaths or injuries that may be related to the Cybertruck's backup camera lag.

Similar to the vast majority of Tesla recalls, the Cybertruck's backup camera lag issue was resolved through a software update. According to the NHTSA Safety Recall Report, starting September 19, 2024 or shortly thereafter, Tesla released a free OTA software update for the Cybertruck that included a fix for the backup camera lag. Tesla noted that no further action is required for vehicles equipped with software version 2024.32.5.2 or later.
