TxDOT emphasizes pedestrian safety

TEXAS (KAUZ) – The Texas Department of Transportation is launching a new campaign to encourage Texas drivers to pay attention to pedestrians.

October was the deadliest month of 2023 for pedestrian deaths, and the number of pedestrian deaths in Texas has increased 22% over the past five years.

The campaign highlights Lisa Torry Smith, who was struck by a vehicle while walking through a crosswalk with her 6-year-old son in 2017. Smith died as a result of the collision, while her son suffered multiple broken bones.

As fall and winter bring earlier sunsets and reduced visibility, TxDOT encourages both drivers and pedestrians to look out for each other.
