The benefits of strength training

Athletes and bodybuilders use strength training to achieve elite status in their profession, but trainer Michael Wittig explains how everyone can benefit from regular strength training.

In fact, everyone from seniors to busy parents can benefit from incorporating some form of strength training into their fitness routine.

“Many people think that weightlifting is only for athletes or young men and girls who want to build muscle,” says Wittig. “But strength training offers so many benefits for people of all ages.”

A key benefit that Wittig highlights is the role of strength training in weight loss and maintenance. When people lose weight through dieting alone, they often lose valuable muscle mass in addition to fat. This can make it harder to keep the weight off long-term, as a slower metabolism makes it easier to gain back the pounds you lost.

“Having a little more muscle, I'm not talking huge, just a little bit. There's a little bit of tension, a little bit more form. It helps boost your metabolism a little bit more,” Wittig said. “It makes it easier for your body to burn faster, and it helps you burn calories a little quicker.”

But the benefits of strength training go far beyond just weight control. Wittig points out that regular strength training, even just 30 minutes a few times a week, can also reduce the risk of serious health problems like diabetes and heart disease.

“It helps with blood flow, reduces inflammation and can even improve mental well-being – which is particularly important for younger generations struggling with the effects of COVID-19,” he says.

For seniors, strength training offers additional benefits such as preventing osteoporosis and improving overall mobility and balance. And the best part is, you don't need a gym membership or any fancy equipment to get started.

“I did a program with my kids that involved lifting cans, cans of beans and just balls and things they had at home. So just something that presents a little challenge. It doesn’t have to be all weightlifting like I did.” Just do something to challenge yourself, just a little.

Whether your goal is to lose weight, improve your heart health, or just feel stronger and more energized, don't overlook the power of strength training. With a little creativity and consistency, everyone can benefit from the surprising benefits.
